The Lake Wakatip Mail. Queenstown, Thursday, October 8, 1868.

The Opposition, led on by the Vogel and Fox party (for we believe Mr Vogel—from the number of speeches he makes—to be the real leader of the Opposition) have accomplished quite a patriotic feat. They have managed to delay the business of the country for seven weeks, at an expense calculated at £SO per sitting hour. Their object was simply to benefit themselves by the obtainance of office. Mr Fox and Mr Bell may not have been so eager for office, but their followers are evidently so, and no matter what it may cost the country their whim must be gratified—they must be made Ministers at any price. These self-dubbed patriots have by their conduct shown that a spurious advocacy of ''Constitutional principles" was but dust thrown in the eyes of the electors. The cry was a good one, but Vogel and his party have by these interminable debates shown that they only adopted it to secure personal ends. To many of the Opposition office is an actual necessity, and hence we find, though Ministers called attention to the enormous expense each day's debate occasioned, the Opposition ignored so slight a consideration, and acted up to the aphorism, " after us, the deluge." The delays occasioned to legislation, the evident greed for office and its emoluments, and the costly expenditure the country has been put to, reflect anything but credit upon the Opposition. If this is patriotism, well may the people cry out, " deliver us from the same."
