THE HOGBURN.

FINDING OF THE BODY OF SEBGEANT GABVEY. The Commissioner of Police has addressed a Report to the Provincial Secretary, by which it would seem that the deceased, in company with Mounted Constable M'Donald, left the Snowy Mountain Rush during a heavy snow storm. The reason of doing so is given by the Mounted Constable, namely, for the sake of their horses, there being neither food nor shelter for them at the rush; that after proceeding for about three hours and a half, in the direction, as they supposed, of the Mount Ida Camp, they parted company, a difference of opinion existing between them as to the correctness of the route they were pursuing. The Constable eventually arrived at Mount Ida on the 16th ultimo, much exhausted and frost bitten; he reported the case to the officer in charge, who lost no time in endeavoring to find the missing Sergeant. 2s o tidings could, however, be found of him until the 30th ultimo, when his body was found lying beside a rock, apparently having been dead for some days. The inhabitants of all g- ades and classes at the Mount Ida gcldfield displayed thr ; utmost alacrity, not only iu sending out parties for the deceased, but subscribed most liberally towards paying the expenses of such persons who could not afford to join the searching parties. Sergeant Garvey was attached to the police department from the 28th November, IS6I, to the time of his death; he served in the Crimean campaign, in the Commissariat Department, and was in possession of the medal and one clasp; he was also a Chevalier de l'ordre Imperial dela Legion d'Honneur. An inquest was held on the body on the sth inst, when the following verdict was returned:

That the body is that of Edward John Garvey, late sergeant of police, and that he died from exposure to cold, having lost his way in the Snowy ranges in the Mount Ida district, whilst in the execution of his duty.
