DUNEDIN ITEMS.

On Sunday morning, a person for a stroll to the Ocean Beach descried an object, which, from the point at which he was standing, presented a rather singular appearance; and on approaching it he found that a case of ejectment had occurred, which it was highly probable would involve the victim in the forfeiture of liberty and life. The moving and capacious jaws, although presenting an excessively ferocious aspect, seemed nevertheless to appeal for pity and assistance in being restored to a more congenial element; but it was destined to be otherwise, for our informant having quitted the scene for the purpose of ob* taining the means for securing the monster alive, found, to his no small disappointment, on his return that two others had secured prize, and were busily employed in possessing themselves of the skin of an unusally large seal, which had evidently been driven ashore during the heavy gale which prevailed a few nights since. Captain Murray, satisfied with the entire success of the navigation of the Molyneux by his steamer the Tuapeka, has come to town to build a steamer fitted to trade between Dunedin and the mouth of the river and to cross the bar. Also to confer with the Government concerning the erection of suitable jetties. The steamer Geelong proceeded on Monday to Taranaki with one hundred men, who have been engaged on behalf of the Government by Lieut. Mace of the Taranaki Militia, for the occupation on conditions of military service, of the confiscated native land on which the murders of Lieut. Tragett and his comrade took place. It is expected a further body of 100 will be procured in Otago, Lieut. Mace being still ready to receive applications.
