THE CHAMPIONSHIP TOUSNAMENT,

. r DUNEDIN, December 50. The N«w Zealand -chess championship tournament was continued to-day, with the following results:—
Fouhey v. Gyles.—Queen’s Gambit Declined. The opening was correctly played, but at the twentieth move Gyles got & strong position by pinning a knight, and subsequently won a piece. Queens were exchanged, and Fouhey, losing a pawn and being much weakened in material, resigned on the thirty-first move.
Mason v. Kelling.—Centre Counter GemLit. On taking the pawn, Kelling returned his queen to queen square. Mason commenced au.attapk at move tweniy-threo and gave up his queen for a pawn. Forceful play followed, in which the black's queen was won. Further los3 of material led to Kelling resigning. * Coombs v. Dunlop.—Queen’s Gambit Dodined. The game resolved itself into a series of exchanges, find of bishops, then of knights, rooks and queens. At the thirtyeighth move each had a piece and pawns, and as there was no advantage a draw was agreed to.
The score sheet now stands as follows: Coombs, h win, 2J losses; Dunlop, 2& wins, i loss; Davies, 2 wins, 1 loss; Fouhey, no wins, 3 losses; Gyles, 2 wins, 1 loss; Kelling, 1 win, 2 losses; Mason, 3 wins, no loss; Severne, 1 wfn, 2 losses.
