JAPAN’S CENSUS.
OVER 77 MILLIONS. The following interesting particulars referring to the latest census returns of the population of the Japanese Empire on October 1 have been cabled by the Imperial Japanese Government to Mr Iv. Tamaki, Acting Consul-General in Sydney. Total population of. the Empire, 77,005,510, composed as follows:
Japan proper . 55,961.140 Korea, .'•••. 17,1284,207 Formosa . • . 6,654,398 Saghalien . . 105,765
These figures, the cablegram states, are less by about 1,000,000 than the estimated population in 1918. The decrease, however, is stated to be due not to any actual Toss, but:, to tlie inaccuracy of the method employed! in making the former estimate. The total population of Japan proper, consists of 28,042,995 males and 27,918,145 females, being 124,850 mom males tiian females. The populations of the principal towns are given as follow:—Tcskio, 2,173,162; Osaka, 1,252.972; Kobe, 605,290; Kyoto, 591,305; Nagoysa, 429,990; Yokohama, 422,942.
