THREE SHILLINGS BONUS.

TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES AND BOARD.

ANOTHER DEPUTATION.

- The Christchurch Tramway Employees’ Union met on Tuesday to consider a proposal by the Tramway Board to reduce the bonus of 9s a week to 3s a week. This.step is contemplated in view .of the recent decision of the Arbitration Court in respect to the additional bonus to workers generally. The board does not intend to make the reduction retrospective, but to enforce it from January 3.

The meeting decided that a further deputation should be sent to the board to place before it reasons why the bonus should not be interfered with. The deputation, after meeting the board, will report to ■ the executive o! the. union, which has been authorised to call a midnight- meeting to consider the. question, if necessary. If that meeting is held a ballot of members will be taken at it op the question whether or not the proposed reduction should be accepted, and, 'in case of a negative vote, what action should be taken.

“We feel satisfied that if the Ixwd will first hear our side ” AiV T. U Armstrong, secretary of the union, said yesterday, “we,can produce ample evidence to show that even if the bonus is not reduced we will be no better off in regard to'wages than employees in other branches of industry in Christchurch. In some respects, indeed, we will be actually worse off.”
