THE CHAMPION TOURNAMENT. [Per Press Association.J DUNEDIN, December 29.

Tlie Now Zealand chess championship tournament was continued to-dav. Following are details of the four games played:

Dunlop v. Davies—Queen’s Gambit Declined.- White developed >.n attack in the mid-game and a queen sacrifice wne presented, which was not accepted, however. White then attacked a knight, which could not bo defended, and on tho twenty-ninth move Davies resigned a hopeless game.

Gyles v. Mason—Buy Lopez opening. Tho game proceeded on tho usual lines, ana White won a pawn on the sixteenth move. This led to an exclinngo of queen's, a bishop for a knight and a rook for rook. At move twenty-five Wliito went wrong and lost a piece, but lie still fought on. Next come an exchange of tho remaining rooks, after which interesting play ensued; but, White, being a piece short, was ultimately compelled to resign on the fifty-third move. Helling v, Fouhy.—Ponziani opening. The first exchange was bishop for' knight, Other exchanges followed, including the queens, at move twenty-one. Helling then won a rook for a bishop. All the queen’s side pawns were, cleared off, said at the fifty-ninth move rooks wore exchanged. This left Helling with rook and +wo pawns against knight and two pawns. Later the rook was exchanged for the knight, and Helling won his opponent’s two pawns. Fouhy resigned the game ou the sixty-sixth move. Coombs v, Severne —Queen’s Gambit Declined. At move twenty Coombs sacrificed a piece under the improssion that he would get it back, but bo failed in this respect, end subsequently lost another pawn. Coombs then tried to force the game, but Scvemo- exchanged the rooks and effected mate on tiro thirty-second move. Following is tho sooro-sueot. to data:—J. B. Dunlop, two wins; A. W. O.
