Clolend president),'the'Mayor oi Dunedin, raid Chiel Juatice • Sir llobert Stout. On behalf of the competitors, Messrs •W. A. Mason and Helling: spoke. There mo eight competitors in the chAmpionaliip, and the hours of play are Used from 2 p.m. to 5.16 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., adjourned games from 9.00 a,in. to 12.30 p.m. The folkwring games were completed:—’ Mason v. Fouhy, Centre Counter Gambit. On the tenth move, Mason announced mate in two. . Gyles v. KelJing, Centro Counter Gambit. At move 23 Helling gave up a rook for a bishop and pawn. Gyles retaliated by giving up a bißhop and a rook and winning Helling’s queen. After this it was easy going for Gyles, and Kelling resigned at the thirty-third move. Punlop v. Severne, Queen'a Gambit Decliliud. At tho nineteenth move Dunlop lost a piece by an error. By brilliant play Dunlop later succeeded in mating Severae on the thirty-fourth more. Davies v. Coombs, Philidor’s Defence. A very even game resulted until about the twenty-eighth mows, when Davies got the upper hand, and Coombs resigned on the thirty-fourth move. At the opening ceremony, congratulatory telegrams won* read from the Wellington Working Men’s Chess .Club, Mr J. C. Grierson, of Auckland, and from the Wellington and Christchurch Chess Clubs.
