THE DAVIS CUP.
POSTPONEMENT CAUSED BY RAIN. [Pvr Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 28.
Steady rain is falling, and the Davis Cup singles fixed for to-day between Brookes and Tilden, and Patterson and Johnston, have been postponed until Wednesday.
A CONTINUOUS DOWNPOUR. [From Our Correspondent.] AUCKLAND, December 28. Tho Davis Cup match has been postponed until to-morrow owing to a continuous downpour. If the sun comes out to-morrow the court will dry rapidly, but the atmosphere will be oj>pressively muggy, probably handicapping Brookes as much as anybody. The postponement was left to Mr. Gore, who inspected the court at midday, in, a downpour, and gave an immediate decision. The barometer is falling steadily, .and predictions are for the continuance of the rain for about twelve hours at least. The court was covered with tarS unites, and the public alleyways were eavily coated with sawdust, but the rain soaked the surrounding turf. Tlie court was flooded Ivy the groundman on Saturday, and Brookes pronounced it a trifle hard on Sunday, but this would have suited both teams, who require speed and accuracy. The rain should not damage the court, but it is so hard that showers during tho play would make it glassy. Brookes stated this morning that his chanoes Of visiting Christchurch wero very slender, owing to the necessity of playing in Australia against the Americans if the boats are running.
