As indicating the inoreaee in values in Auckland during the war period, it is significant (eavs the "Now Zealand Herald") to note that 188 dwellingß for which permits wero issued in' tho 1915-16 period, were valued at £11W,631, while the 190 dwellings for whioh permits were granted during the year ended March 31, 1920, were valued at £211,180. Tho average value of the 188 dwellings in the 1915-16 period was approximately £6BG. while the average value of the 190 dwellings erected m the 1919-20 period was over £llOO. Councillor Sullivan has given notice of his intention to move the following motion at the < meetinc of the City Council to-night:—-"That with a view to the encouragement of New Zealand secondary industries, and in order to maintain the prosperity of the country, the Minister ot Commerce and Industry be urged to carry out a propaganda throughout the Dominion, urging the peoplo to purchase only New Zealand made goods, When such goods can be obtained. The disease commonly known as bush sickness is affecting cattle and sheep in some bush districts in New Zealand, says a northern exchange. Cattle and sheep which are attacked by the disease, no matter if feed is plentiful and good, gradually sink and die. It is thought that insufficiency of salt in the herbago is the cause of the ailment, and a farm has been established at Mamaku near Rotorua, by tho Agricultural Department for the purpose of treating the disease and ascertaining its cause. Dr A. J. Reakes, Director of Agriculture, who recently visited the farm, said tho work was proceeding in a satisfactory manner. | The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon G. J. Anderson) returned to Wellington on Saturday from a visit to the Rotorua and Taupo districts, where he went for the purpose of investigating the methods adopted by his Department for conserving the trout. During the past season several complaints were made, and, said Mr Anderson to a " Post " representative, " I wanted to see for myself bow things were. I have come to the conclusion that what the Department has been doing in the past is m the interests of anglers and toiirists who go to the Hot Lakes district for the fishing. The Department's policy lias been to reduce within reasonable limits the number of fish in the lakes; that is, it aims at keeping the fish down to the number for which food is available. That the work done by the Department has had good results is admitted by every impartial angler and by the responsible people of the districts. The fish in lakes Rotorua, Rotoiti, and Taupo are very much improved of late.' < Incidentally the Minister mentioned that a thirteen pound trout was Gaught at the end of the lake near Taupo village on Thursday and was forwarded by the successful angler to the Governor-General. Mr Anderson also mentioned that the fish hatchery has turned out an enormous number of young fish this year, but improvements were necessary and they would bo made.
