NEWS AND NOTES. S. Trilford, who has been training horses in South Canterbury for many years, first at Washdvke and latterly at >)rari, has accepted an engagement as private trainer to the North Canterbury sportsman, Mr Gordon Fulton, and he will take up his new position about the end of January. Trilford has been very successful with all classes of horses, and has done exceptionally well with jumpers, lie lias turned out many important winners over hurdles and “steeplechase country, Hylans and Crib being two horses who did well for his stable last winter H. Young was riding at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Thursday, but he was prevented, on account of ill-health, from fulfilling any engagements y ester day. The totalisator investments at tho South Canterbury meeting yesterday, £24,527, and the total for this week’s meeting. £47,237 10s, were a record for the cluo, while the sum handled on the concluding event yesterday, £4501, was also a course record. The previous best total for a meeting was £37,437 last autumn. The Riccarton trainers who contemplate taking teams to Ellerslie tor the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club have made a start to work their horses right-handed, in preparation for the reverse way oi : going at the northern fixture. From present indications it looks as if there would be a strong contingent ot liorses from this quarter racing at Ellerslie. Sir George Clifford's team may include Winter Mind, Nightraider, R-oyal Stag, Mis« JMimic, Counterstroke and. Winning Hit; Mr G. I). Murdoch, was in Christchurch this weekThe yearling by Boniform, from Margarethe, purchased on his behalf at the sales in Carnival Week,, has been gelded, and it is probable that arrangements will be made to have him trained at Riccarton. A London message states that Bullock. while riding Kerasos, at Manchester. had a heavy fall. He was badly shaken and sustained injuries to his face. Nominations for all handicap events of the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting on December 28, 30 and 31 close at the office, Durham Street East, Auckland, on Friday, December 3, at 5 p.m. On the same date are due the final payments of Bix soveigns each on the Great Northern Trotting Derby, 1920-21, and the first acceptances of the same event for 1921-22. Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s New Zealand Derby Stakes, 1923, close at noon on Wednesday next, December 1. Payment on tho same event, 1921, closes at tho same time. For the trotting races at Dunedin, railway excursion tickets will be issued from “Lyttelton, Waimatc-, Invercargill and intermedia to stations on Wednesday, December 1, available for return until December 11. In connection with the Methven races, a special passenger . train, stopping where required to pick up passengers, will leave Christchurch at 8 a.m. oil December 2, arriving at Methven at 10.55 a.m. it will return leaving Methven at 6.15 p.m., arriving in Christchurch at 9.15 p.m. In tho event of a postponement of the races, tho special train will not run. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. The spring meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club was concluded yesterday. Rain fell overnight, but the weather cleared boon after midnight, and tho day was fine, despite a cloudy sky for about an hour late in tho afternoon. Tho attendance was large and there was some fair racing. The totalisator investments were £24,527, compared with £19,431 10s on tho corresponding day last year, making £47,237 10s for the meeting, against £36,977 10s last year.
