This week the drapers have been sndoavourihg to stimulate business by clearance sales, an unusual feature at this time of the year, and with some cutting of prices fn other lines tho retail trade hae been more active than for some time past. There is still much congestion in the waterfront and private storage, but an active Christmas •jrade will help to relieve the situstion. The recent reduction in prices of tea has resulted in substantial sales to the retailers, and householders are taking advantage of the drop to replenish stocks. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. Tho produce markets are generally easier in tone. Southern potatoes are virtually neglected,. the latest quotation being is per cwt for best quality. New potatoes are selling in the city at ljd to 2d per lb wholesale. American onions are selling at 85s a crate. Oats alto in good supply, tho Kamona having started to discharge a southern cargo. The market is dull, best feed being worth 5s 8d to 5s 6d per bushel ex-store. With warmer weather, the demand for maize is weaker, and consignments have been offering at 7s 9d per bushel on the wharf. The best southern chaff is selling slowly •t 14s per cwt ex-store.
