SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND.

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 25. In connection with the campaign for the Save the Children Fund, the Mayor (Mr Luke) recently cabled to Sir James Allen as follows Making appeal in Wellington province for relief of distress in Europe. Is the need urgent and administration of fund effective?” Sir James Allen replied as follows: “ Please inform Mayor of Wellington, in reply to his telegram of November 9, that moneys are urgently required by the Save the Children Fund and Imperial War Relief Fund. Over £40,000 has been received from New Zealand for the former, which is distributing the same through local agencies under an approved scheme, as per my telegram of November 1. 2116 Imperial War Relief Fund has been organised to combat, through local distributing agencies, general distress and disease. See telegrams, etc., between Colonial Office, Governor-General and New Zealand Red Cross Societies since last June. A special typhus campaign will be organised, provided funds are available, but only £35,000 has been received up to date for all purposes. They estimate their administration charges at 10 per cent, whilst the cost of local agencies may amount to an additional 15 per cent. I consider these excessive, and if funds are forthcoming from New Zealand, will endeavour to make similar arrangements as with the Save the Children Fund.”
