TOWN HALL SITE.

TO TUB EDITOII. Sir, —There is hope oven for Councillor Langley. It is only a few weeks ago thnfc ho pooh-poohed the opinion expressed by me at a City Con nail meeting that the site fronting Victoria Square proposed for a Town Hall would cost the city not less than £50,000. Now he recognises that my estimate was nob very far out after all. When ho has hnd l a little more experience in real property matters. J nave not tho slightest doubt but tfiai ho will also come to the conclusion that tho loss which tho city ratepayers will have to bear if tho Town Hall project is carried out will bo quite equal to 20 per cent of tho general rates now levied. He will become a voritablo wizard of finance when lie is nble to so manage a Town Hall as to make it “ payable from all points of view.” I am afraid it will require something more than Councillor Langley’s figures to make ratepayers believe that the risk of having to beur a heavy rate to make up tho loss on a Town Hall is "all moonshine.”—l ain, etc., J. A. FLLSHER. Christchurch, June 14, 1920.
