SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

OPENED AT CASHMERE. Tho Christchurch Sheep Dog Trial Club’s twenty-first annual competitions wero commenced yeoterday at Cashmere, in showery weather, on tho property of Mr J. F. Scott, Opawa. The site of tho trials, which was tiro same as on previous occasions, was very suitable for tho purpo3>, being on tho right side of tho gully below tlio Sanatorium. Tho sbeep used wero half-bred wetiiors belonging! to Mr Socxtt, and some of thorn gave tho dogu a good deal of trouble, several of the lator compotitoro having to doal with very wild sheep. Work was concluded for tho day at four o’clock, when all but eight of tho thirty entrants in tho first class had competed. This class was for heading, bringing back, holding in and yarding, from a distanoo of about 301) yards, fifteen minutes boing the time allowed. Points were awarded as follow: —Heeding 9, bringing back 9, holding l one minute in ring 6, driving from ring lo pen 3, style at yards a, yarding 8, under oominand lo"; total, SO points. Chiefly oil account of tlio sheep, no particular brilliancy was shown.

Tho first competitor, Mr A. Turpin’o Ross, cast to the left, and ran a very poor lino. Ho succeeded in heading, however, in ffmia IGac-c. Ho mado a fair drive to tho yard, after holding them tho full time in rather poor stylo, but yarded at tho first attempt in iOmin Ilsec.

Mr 0. C. Gray’s Boss Junx. also cast to tho left. Ho mado a good clean head in limn 22sec, and after a stoady pull, hold ilia sheep in Train 30seo. After a fine drive to the yard, ho failed to pen his sheep, although a good attempt was made. Mr G. Lang's Bruco lot his flock split up, and finally lost them altogether. Captain Paco (Mr R. \V. Trotter) made a wide head in 2min Ssoo, tho sheep coming; down a considerable way to moot him. Ho v,-its rather rash, and tho sheep wore out of tho ring most cf the time tho dog holding in Grain 63sco. A .poor drive was completed in ldniin llsec, tiro sheep running of their own accord, and were not put in tho pen. Mr T. H. Bennett’s Odd headed slowly in 2min 43seo. He pulled very quietly. Tho sheep, howevor, were never steady in tho ring, and split.

Mr W. Starky’s Razor made a quiet head, which took 2min 35seo. He pulled rashly, the sheep breaking away to tho right and left of tho ring. Mr J. Trotter’s Fluke succeeded in yarding his sheep in 13min 43sec, after a mediocre drive. Tho heading off was performed quietly in 2min Xlseo, but a rash pull followed, and tho sheep wero poorly held in 6min 43500.

Mr T. if. Bennett’s Gale did not yard. Tho shcop wore headed in lmin 25bcc, and arrived quietly in the ring in 3min 53seo. although a certain amount of rashnoss was manifested. Tho dog stood well to tho sheep in tiro ring, and held them tho full time. A bad drive followed, but success in yarding was very nearly achieved.

Mr li. T. Chapman’s Bran crossed tho sheep after a poor run out, but headed them off in lmin 2Sr.ec. At the attempt to return, tho sheep got held up, and tho dog failed to got them out. Mr A. Turpin’s Barlcev did not get hie sheep near tho pen. Tho heading was accomplished in lmin Slsec, and after a foeble pull the flock arrived on the flat to the right of the ring, where they were sccuroly held in 6min lisec. tho dog standing well. The remnindor of tho work was not noteworthy.

.Mr F. Long’s Check headed slowly, after making a cross. A good lino was kept, and the sheep wore held in (lmin 24Bec, although they wero out of tb? ring a good deal of the time. A poor drive followed. On the wholo tho work was of a poor quality, although tho dog succeeded in penning tho flock in 14min 12sec. . Moss (Mr John Morgan) also crossed his head, but headed off in 2min 12sec. A split occurred, but tho fleck wero mustered and held in Oiuin 48e,ce. This dog also had the sheep outside the ring for a largo part of tho time. Tho attempt at yarding was poor and failed completely. , Mr B. F. Whitney’s Northopedirk headed off in 2mm 40see, crossing to do so. Tho slieop split and soattered. t The man left the ring when tho nineteenth competi'or (Mr 13. Fraser’s Jack) was working. The dog headed quietly and pulled off the fine to the right. . Mr J. Trotter’s Scott was unsuccessful in yarding, although a fair drive was made. The heading was executed in lmin 51 see, the ■sheep coming downhill on their own account. Time was consumed in a run off to the right of tho ring, but they wore brought back and hold in 7mm 43seo. Robinson's two clogs, Lem and Tweed, lost their sheep in returning, _tho heading being accomplished in 2min -ioseo and 3miu sseo respectively. Mr K. W. Trotter’s imported dog, Mons, headed off his flock in 2min 23soc, after makin.r a cross. Ho pulled in quietly, and the sheep wero hold at the first attempt in 7mm 52sec. They wero put in tho pen after a fine drive. - _ . Mr F. Harding’ s Hon in ado tho hcact-off m lmin 55bcc. and held tho flock without any trouble. Fair work was put in at tho pen, but the sheep wore not yarded. _ Air W. D. Griovc’s Jed rnado a fair line, and headed, lmin Dosec. Rashness was shown in pulling in.
