SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. A Wanganui Press Association message states that on returning to the paddock, alter training work yesterday morning, Student dropped dead. The winter meeting of the North Otago Jockey Club will ho commenced to-day and concluded to-morrow. The fields on the first day are of good size, and tho quality is quite satisfactory in tho principal events. Jack Symons has the best credentials of the horses engaged in the Empire Hurdle Handicap, and a further point in his favour is that he has recent form to recommend him. Kilboyne showed promising form over hurdles at Riccart-on last month, and with the schooling he has had since then ho should bo a greatly improved horse.

Will Oakland has a good load to carry in the Redcastle Welter Handicap 'at Oamaru, but his recent running makes him out a very useful horse, and lie will bo very hard to head off at the end of six furlongs. Torfreda has so far found a mile too far for her, and though she may bo out setting tho pace in tho _ early stages of the Oamaru Cup, she is not likely to be on hand at tho finish. Rorlcc’s Drift, on the other hand, will probably fail through the journey being too short-

Caverock has been racing well lately, and he and Linden may have a good deal to do with the finish of the Oamaru Cup. 4 Tho horses engaged m tho North, Otago Steeplechase aro a poor lot. Arlington, who is easily the best _of them, cannot stay, but there is nothing in tho fiel<& that looks capable of testing his stamina. There are some useful sprinters in the Stewards’ Handicap at Oamaru. The list is headed by Radial, while Pyjama is at the other end, and this pair may play a prominent part. The Southland gelding, Marching Order, has run one or two decent races lately, and he will have to be reckoned with in the Ferubrook Handicap at Oamaru.
