CHILDREN'S BALL.

The Mayor's invitation to the children of Greater Christchurch, Lytt'elton and suburbs to a fancy dress ball afc the King .Edward Barracks on Saturday next, is being widely approved, and a provisional committee, consisting of Mr J. S. Hawkes, G. T. Aschmau, F. C. Raphael, W. J. LeCron, F. Anderson, A. D. Ford and Councillor J. 0. Jameson met: last evening at the City Council Chambers to arrange the preliminaries- Dr Thacker presided. Some dischssion took place as to the number of children who should bo invited, and it was agreed to admit two relays each of 1500 children, those of live,' six, seven, eight and nine years from 4.30 to 7 p.m., and children of ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and fourteen from 7.80 till 10 p.m. It was agreed to admit, free, one parent or guardian to each family. It was decided by the Mayor to include in the invitations all primary, secondary and private schools served by tho tramway service, and also the. Lyttelton schools. A snb-commiti'ee, consisting of Mrs H. R. Smith and Messrs Asehman, Raphael, H. Holland and J. A. Fleshcr was set up to allocate the quota of invitations, on the understanding .that tlm head masters of schools should select' the children to receive invitations. The proportion of boys and girls from -each school was left' to tho head masters. Two relays each of 150 Scouts wero invited to attend in. uniform, as well as children from Cambrian Society, the Scottish Society, and the Caledonian Society, and the orphanages. Sister Collins. Mrs Holland, Mrs Smith, Mrs Gresham and the Mayoress wero appointed a Catering Committee. The Mayor stated that Mrs Holmes would provide any number of Harbour Lights girls to wait. Captain Oossgrovo and Messrs F. C j Raphael. A. D. Ford, Le Cren and J. O. Jameson were appointed an Entertainment Committee. i
