NEWS AND NOTES. Nominations for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting will close at noon to-day. Thero is not a great deal doing on the tracks at Riccarton at present. Many,of the horses who raced at the Royal meeting on Saturday have now finished up their season's labours, and they will have a quiet time for a few weeks, prior to making a start again for spring engagements. A few local trainers have horses engaged nt Oamaru and Wingatui, and they are being kept moving along. Yesterday's work was of a very uninteresting nature. The inside of the trial grass was open for fast work, but it was not in much request. Cavereck and Nautical ran six furlongs on the grass, finishing together, without bciug ridden out, at the end of a useful gallop. Clean bweep and Wrestler rattled over half a mile on the plough, showing plenty of dash and finishing strongly. Wrestler is gradually getting into form and in thu meantime he appears to dp quite sound. Spyglass and Hereweare jumped tn« two pony hurdles and then took on one of the big obstacles, both shaping Veil. A numbor of other horses put in an appearance on the tracks, but their tasks, in- the ma.in, were .of an easy character. Tthe North Island horses that weio unable to get away by the ferrv steamer on Monday are < back at Riccarton, and they will remain there pending a settlement of the trouble. J. W. Lowe intended to take Coalition and Seadown to Auckland this week, but they are also nominated ai the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, and if the present trouble continues they may bo raced at Wingatui ut>xt month.

P. T. Hogau went south on Monday with Almoner, Silver9pire and Kilkee. The horses were left at Oamaru for the North Otago Jockey Club's meeting this weokj while Hogan went home to Invercargill to haye a look at other members of his big team. A. I>. M'lvor took Eleus, Silvei Peak and Primum to Oamaru yesterday morning, bo fulfil engagements at the North Otago Jockey Club's meeting. G. Reed, in charge of Melee, left by the second express yesterday for Oamai*a, whero he will also have Claverhouse and probably' Kilboyne racing this week. Melee is > suffering from an abscess on the jaw, which broke en Sunday morning. J. T. Jamieson left for Oamaru yesterday with Torfreda. The other members of the North Island trainer's team consisting of Murihiku, Prince Martian and Strategy, *tre already at Oamaru, having gone on after _ racing' at the South Canterbury meeting last week.

WANGANUI NOTES. [Per Press Association .3 WANGANUI, May 18. The weather was fine this morning for training work. Matatane and Ruddy ran seven furlongs in lmin 32 2-sseo. Lady General beat Miss Gold easily over five furlongs. Toatere finished in front ot Khartoum and Pretty Bobby atjthe end of seven furlongs. Goldstream beat Gold Soult over a round.

• Sir Solo shaped better than Ngakanui over the big fences. Ngakanui stumbled and lost his rider at the double.

Gladful ran seven furlongs in lmin Sssec.

Zeus was too good for Sir Donald and Manhattan over the big fences. Maraetotare did a round over thf: fences.

Prodigal, Riki and Depredation ran six furlongs in lmin 20seo.
