From noon on Saturday Until noon to-djiy 190 mild cases of influenza and 20 severe cases were notified in tho Auckland health district, There were 23 mild cases in tho city and 48 mild and four sovero in tho suburbs. The remaining cases are in tho country districts. BIG INCREASE In"WELLINGTON DISTRICT. WELLINGTON, Alay 17. Returns of infectious diseases notified from various parts of tho Wellington Public Health District, for the week ended at noon to-day, showed an increase of 525 in tho number oi cases of influenza, compared with the figures for the previous week. Altogether 798 influenza notifications were received during the week by the District Health Office, of which twenty related to pneumonic cases, three to severe and 775 to mild cases. The city figures were seven pneumonic (two severe) and 305 mild. The District Health Officer (I)r J. E. Paris) stated that so far as Wellington city was concerned the position was reassuring, in that the ratio of pneumonic to mild cases was not increasing unduly- “it is anticipated,” said Dr Paris, “ that the-ro will bo sovoral waves of this mild type of influenza during the winter months, as many of tho cases reported are the samo as those experienced five years or so ago when the disease was not so dreaded as it is to-day.” Owing to tho spread of influenza in tho form of heavy colds, followed by severe bronchial attacks, children under fifteen are prohibited from attending the picture theatres. PRIMARY SCHOOLS CLOSED. PALMERSTON NORTH, May 17. AH the primary schools in Palmerston North have now closed on account of sickness. Influenza has spread rapidly amongst the children, hut principally in a mild form. Mumps aud measles aro also prevalent.

SOUTHLAND NOTIFICATIONS INCREASING. INVERCARGILL, Alay 17. During the week ended Sunday, 92 cases of influenza were notified in the Southland health district, against 44 for tho previous week. The cases aro mostly mild.
