Mr J. Donovan, Commissioner of Police, arrived in Christchurch yesterday with Inspector Broberg.

Major-General Sir Edward Chaytor, Major-General Sir Alfred Robin, MajorGeneral Richardson and Colonel Sleeman arrived in Crristchurch yesterday from tljp north. Ml- It. W. M’Villy, General Manager of Railways, and Mr J. Mislop, Undersecretary of Internal Affairs, _ arrived in Christchurch yesterday with the Pi ince’s entourage.

In connection with the purchase of the business of Milner and Thompson by 0. Begg and Company, a pleasing funotiou took place yesterday afternoon, Mr Walter Thompson and Mr Reginald Thompson being presented by the staff with two handsome lvaiapoi tokens of esteem. Mr It. H. Rossiter, in making the presentations, referred to the very cordial relations that had existed between the retiring directors and the employees, who wished them every happiness m the future. Both recipients cordially responded.

At the annual meeting of the Christchurch Master Painters’ Association on Tuesday evening, Mr J. A. Lummis, on behalf of tho members, presented Mr D. Lee, who was retiring from the office of president after occupying the position for seven years, with a silver tea and coffee service and silver salver. Mr Lummis voiced the appreciation of members and thanked Mr Lee for tho excellent, service ho had rendered to the association. Several other members also spoko of Mr Lee's good qualities and made appreciative references to his work on behalf of the Master Painters’ Association. Mr Lee thanked members for their gift and tho kindly sentiments expressed.

A gathering was hold at the offices of the Dominion Compressed Yeast Company, Ltd., on Wednesday afternoon to bid farewell to the company’s accountant, Mr Eldridgo. Reference was made to (he high esteem in which Mr Eldrid go was held, and on behalf of those present the manager presented him and Mrs Eldridgo lyith an afternoon tea set of Aynsley”china, and wished Mr Eldridgo every success in his now sphere of business activities. Opportunity was also taken to present a specially interesting book for Master Neil and Miss Kona Eldridgo. In replying Mr Eldridge said he waa pleased that he would bo able to look back with much pleasure to tho happy associations formed during the time ho had been with the company.

The staff of the Sunnyside Mental Hospital met yesterday for the purpose of making a presentation to Dr St L. Gribben, who for over four years has been medical superintendent of that institution, and who is about to take up the position of medical superintendent at Kihikihi. Dr P. M. Reale, assistant medical officer, in making a presentation of a Worcester eolfee set, expressed on behalf of the staff their sincere regret that Dr Gribben was leaving. In responding, Dr Gribben said that his feelings, after Dr Beale’s remarks, wove more than he could express. The fact that ho had been able to cope with troubles was duo to tho loyal qualities of the staff, to whom the credit was really due. The staff then joined in heartily singing “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow."
