REPLIES FROM MINISTER, The secretary of the committee of the Canterbury members of Parliament, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P-. has received the following telegrams from Sir William Fraser ; Minister of Public Works: —" Your wires of February 13 received. I cannot see any reason for increasing the scale of wages at the Otira tunneL The contracting gang at the Bealey end are earning about 22s per iluy, whereas wages men are earning lus per day. It is quite open to the latter to earn 22s per day by doing- work on contract, but they persistently decline to do so. I am obtaining reports with respect to the Sumner-Lyttelton Road, also tKe bridge over the Selwyn River." A second telegram received by Mr Sullivan from the Minister says:—" Delay has occurred through local bodies declining to ask for commission (regarding the allocation of the cost of erecting a bridge over the Selwyn). Prior to the Government taking the initiative in the setting up of a commission it will be necessary to have plans and estimates of 1&e bridge prepared. I have given instructions to have such plans and estimates prepared."
