CITY COUNCIL.

The Christohuroh City Counoil met last evening; present—The Mayor (Dr Thacker, M.P.), and Councillors A. Williams, J. A. Flesher, C. P. Agar, Cuthbert S. Harper, J. 0." Jameson, F. Burgoyne, H. T. Armstrong, E. E. Liingley, H. Hunter, D. G. Sullivan, M.P., H. F. Herbert, E. Peek, E. H. Andrews and J. W. Beanland. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors A. M'Kellar and W.'Nijholls. Tne financial statament for the two weeks ending February 11 showed that of the general rato levied of £78,761 18s it was estimated that £34,663 Is 6d had been collected, leaving £39,093 14s id outstanding. The receipts since the previous statement amounted to £33,105 lis lOd and accounts amounting to £17,708 18a wore passed for payment. Councillors Langley and Williams were appointed a sub-committee to select pictures by New Zealand artists for tho Art Gallery. Mr A. Rowley, Manager of the Strand Theatre, wrote inviting ihe Mayor, Mayoress and members of tho council to see a film representing the visit of the Princo of Wales to Canada. The invitation was accepted. The Prime Minister wrote stating that a motion by the council supporting the Invercargili Borough Council in its proposals to provide safeguards at level crossings would be given serious consideration.

The Electricity Committee recommended that if a stand-by electrioal scheme was proceeded with, it should be authorised to retain Mr E. E. Stark's services as engineer for carrying out the scheme. , Councillor Jameson moved that the roporfi should be referred back to the committee for further consideration. Ho said that if the committee wished to secure Mr Stvk's services it could obtain permission to do eo at the time. A motion that the counoil should discuss the report in committee was lost. Councillor Jameson's motion, whioh was seconded by Councillor Hunter, was lost by six votes to nine, and tho report was adopted. The Water Supply Committee reported that the Fire Board had drawn attention to the necessity for reticulating the northern portion of St Albans, North Linwood, Avonside, Opawa and St Martins distriots. The committee recommended that the board should bo informed that there was no money available for extensions to the water supply, and nothing could be done until the ratepayers of the distriots concerned consent to a loan being raised for the purpose. A requisition from the ratepayers in any of the districts mentioned asking the counoil to take a poll for the purpose of raising a loan for providing a high presisure water supply would be favourably considered by tho committee. The report was adopted.

The. Works and Sanitary Committee recommended that as tramway extensions would cross the Dallington Bridge soon, necessitating considerable alterations, tho widening of tho bridge at presout was inadvisable Tho following proposed works ' wore being considered:—Tarring Tuam Street West, Liverpool Street and Bedford Row; tarring paths and roadways at the Linwood cemetery; street widening at tho corner of Hornbrook Street and Wilson's R<iad. The report was adopted. The By-laws Committee recommended that the council, should object to -tho city having to pay anything towards the coat of a bridgo over the Avon at Burwood, as it would be a long way outsido tho city boundaries and would not be of any benefit to any of the citizens. Mr W. M. Ollivior'a application to dedicate a strip of land on Eastern Torrace, River Road, for road widening, should be granted, and the council should accept an offer by Mtr JJ. OiNoil of land to widen Stanmoro Road at Draper Street at 30s per foot, Mr O'Neil to Teiuove the fence to the now boundary. The Teport was adopted. In accordance- with notice Councillor Agar moved:—"That the Finance, By-lawe and Departmental Committee be dissolved and in lief thereof the council appoint two standing committees as follows: (1) Finance.and Departmental; (2) By-laws and Sanitary.." The motion was lost on the voices.
