Mr A'. H. O. Cavell, of tho local Supremo Court staff, has received word that he has passed the final of his law professional examination. Mr Duncan M’ Queen, a very old resident of Ashburton, died suddenly at the residence of his nioce, Mrs M. Mackintosh, Cox Street,, Ashburton, early yesterday'- morning. Deceased had been attended Ijy a doctor for some time for heart trouble. Mr 0. W. Allard, first assistant master. of tho Ashburton Borough School, has been appointed to take charge ot the primary department at tho West Christchurch Softool. Mr H. R. Smith (Town Clerk) intends to visit Australia shortly; and he has been granted two months’ leave of absence. Tho chief clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) has been appointed ActingTown Clerk during Mr bmith',s absence. , His Worship the Mayor (Dr Thacker, M.P.) and Mrs Thacker will leave Christohurch this afternoon for Dkain's Bay in order to spend Christmas with their relatives. They will probably return to tho city about theend of the week. Copies of tho "Proceedings” of the Linnoan Society of London, received in Christchurch yesterday, contain a long notice of the career of Dr E. A. Nowell Archer, who died, on June 14, 1919. and whose last work but one; was a memoir on tho fossil plants of tho Mesozoic Era in New Zealand, published ift Wellington by the New Zealand Geological Survey. It is described ns one of the two most valuable memoirs he produced. Ho also did a groat deal of work on the fossil plants collected by the Scott Expedition in tho Antarctic, but did not publish anything on them. Ho was born in London,"and was forty-eight years of ago. He was an honorary member of the Now Zealand Institute. On Friday afternoon several presentations were made at the Beckenham (school. The head master, Mr A. C. Maxwell, was presented by tho pupils of the Sixth Standard with a fhlvermoiiiitod Loewo pipe. Tho presentation -was made, on behalf of tho class, by Miss L. Harris. Mr E- M. Todd, who is leaving tho school after a year’s work as relieving teacher, was presented by the pupils of Standards HI. and IV*. with two books. Miss E. Brophy and Miss L.
