The Shipping Controller’s latest offer to the marine engineers is the New Zealand award rates, plus 80s weekly for juniors, to bring the scale up to from £lB to £SO. MELBOURNE, Decomber 20. The Victorian marine engineers have decided to accept tho Shipping Controller’s offer and will resume, on Monday. SYDNEY REJECTS OFFER. (Received December 21, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 21. A ballot of the Sydney branch of the Marine Engineers’ Association rejected by a largo majority tho Shipping Controller’s terms for a settlement. TROUBLE IN SOUTH AFRICA. CAPE TOWN, December 19. Tho embargo on tho export of fooistuffs continues. Tho Railway Union is in sympathy, and members of tho inland centres are taking action to prevent railage to the coast. . . Mr H. Burton, Minister of Railways, interviewed the local trade union secretaries and pointed out that the Government had already stopped tho exportation of meal, bacon and eggs, and would act similarly with respect to other commodities of which a shortage existed. The Government was doing its utmost to protect consumers, while heeding the importance of not destroying the export trade. Ho characterised direct action amongst the whites as most dangerous and reprehensible, being calculated to inflamo the native mind. STRIKE LOSSES IN AMERICA. WASHINGTON, Decembor 17. Statistics show that the miners lost £12,000,000 in wages during the recent strike.
