MR TV. H. RHODES, OF AMBERLEY.

Mr W. H. Rhodes, a very old and highly respected resident of Amberley, .died yesterday morning, after a short illness. Mr Rhodes was returning officer for the Hurumii district, b,ut owing to tho. tact that ho had been ill for l some time ho had not been actively engaged ou the duties ,of that office. ’ Mr Rho'dos was in business as a general 1 storekeeper and grain. merchant in Amberley. He established his business in 1898, and conducted extensive; operations in general farm produce. • He wn.% horn in 1854, at Lyttelton, arid accompanied his father, the late Mr Alfred Rhodes, in 1867,- to Leithfield, where he, was brought up to country life. In 1866 he .joined Messrs Bean ‘and Co., in Amberley, 1 and when the firin' relinquished 1 business in 1890, Mi' Rhodes took over tho produce branch, which ho had since conducted. Mr Rhodes took a general interest in matters affecting the welfare of his district. He was a momber of various local, organisations and bodies, and lonian active part in public affairs. *
