[From Our Correspondents, j ASHBTJBTON. Dr C. Chilton, lir C. Farr and Dr Hilgendorf, members of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, visited Asnburum on Saturday afternoon and met a large gathering of laaics and gentlemen in the Agricultural and Pus Ural Association’s rooms with the object of lurtkering the work of the institute and increasing its membershin. The Mayor (Mr B. Galbraith) presided. Interesting addresses were given by the visitors, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. HAMPSTEAD. The Hampstead Town Board has obtained expert advice in reiereuce to an underground sewerage scheme lor the district, and as soon as tho scheme is comp.cto it will be submitted to the ratepayers with a view to tueir sanctioning a loan to have the work carried out. One of the greatest crowds ever witnessed in the Belfast Town Hall assembled on Friday evening to weicome home ao.umra who have recently returned and to acknowledge the services ol Air W. Rogers as a yatnouc worker. The secretary ol the Reception Ooinmitloe, Air E. Rudkin, read the names of tnose to whom the welcome home was tondeicd, as fohows: —W. U. Brown, E. E. Cater, J. M. Crawford, J. Clark, H. A. Dawber, F. Dunlop, G. Edmonds, ii. A. Fergus, S. Greens:ado, J. H. Gates, VV. 11. Gtithrio, J. C. Thompson, E. R. Wilson, A. M. Wilsden and W. Walker Mr E. J. Wotton extended a hoarty welcome to tho soldiers on behalf of the residents of Belfast and surrOimdii.g districts. Mr W. Aiicholl3 and tho Rev T. M. Curnow also addressed thoso present, and Private W. G. Brown suitably responded on behalf of tho soldiers. Tho platform was tueu taken by Mr F. Reid, who, on behalf of tho returned soldiers of the district presented Mr W. Rogors with a silver level watch in recognition of his work as secretary of (he local soldiers’ trench comforts fund. Mr Wotton, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented Mr Rogers with an iliumina ed address in recognition of his untiring efforts in connection with general patriotic work. Mr Nicholls, Mr Poison and the Rev Mr Curnow also spoke m terms of appreciation of the work done by Mr Rogers. Tho recipient, in responding, said that whai ho lujd done ho considered to bo this duty, and ho had taken a pleasure in doing it. C oers wero given for the returned soldiers and Mr Royers. During the ovening songs were contributed by Miss Merrin and Mr Curnow. Excellent music for tho dancing was Bunnlied by Wells’s String Bard, and Mr E. Rudkin carried out tho duties of M.C. Mr Dunlop kindly lent a marquee, in which iiho supper tables wore set, and the arrangements carried out under the supervision of Mrs Glass. Tho marouco was tastefully decorated, and tho whole function proved a grqat success. SEFTON. On Friday evening a very pleasant and successful social was held in tho Sefton Rink Hall by tho Sefton Miniature Rifle Club. There was a largo attendance, and tho hall was tastofully . docorated with streamers and flags. During the evening sungs wero contributed by Mr and Mrs Nick..lls. The music for the dance was provided by Mr R. Woods, while Messis E. Topp, W. Livingstone and J. <lonry acted as M.C.’s. Tho prizes which wero won by members during tho past season wore presorted by Mr 11. Thomsou, president of the c.ub, the prize list being as follows Club championship (best fifteen nights out of tw nty), J. Collie; runner-up, J. J. Henry; highest aggregate foi twenty nights. S. E. Ritchie; best fifteen nights in second class, S. Quick; runner-up. Miss Jean M'Gowan; mist improved shot in club (presented by Mr James Aslnvorth, jun.), S. Quick; Astridgo Shield, S. Ritcliio, S. Mitchell (Miss Quick). ASHLEY.

A very onjcyablo social was held in the Ashley Schoolroom last Friday night, when tho returned soldiers of tho district entertained all the local patriotic war workers, and disbanded patriotic committees to a return social. Thoie was a very largo attendance, visitors boing present from Ranyiora and the surrounding district- For the first part of the evening an excellent programme of songs, recitations and musical items was given bv Mrs Trollope, Misse3 Young and Barrcll. Mr Do Lnney, and Miss Buckley. Corporal H. Bookor, on behalf cf • ho returned soldiers, thanked the oommittee, for the warm welcome extondod to the soldi era on their r«turm Mr G. H.

Downard suitably responded on behalf of the workers, after which dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Miss Humphrey’s Band. A public meeting of residents of the Ashley district was held in the Schoolroom to consider a memorial to fallen soldiers for the Ashley school district. Mr C. H. Downard presided over’a large attendance. After considerable discussion it was decided to erect a monument, but the question of the form which this should take was loft to a future meeting to decide. A subscription list was opened, and a large sum was promised in tho room. * KAIAPOL The unveilins" of t£e Kaiapoi Cycling Club's 801 l of Honour took place in the clubrooms on Saturday ovening. The honours board contains the names of forty-four members, seven oi whom have made the supreme sacrifice. The unveiling ceremony was performed by the president ot the club (Mr R. Evans), who briefly referred to the great debt of gratitude owed by all to those who so unse.fishly had fought on their behalf, The Mayor (Mr J. H. Blackwell) also spoko, and the ceremony concluded 'with the singing of the National Anthem. r GREENDALE. There was a large attendance of residents and friends in tho Orange Hall to.welcome homo Lieutenant 1. Juggins, Sergeant Major 0. Wood, Corporal F. M. Stevenson, Lance-Corporal G. A low games were indulged in, followed by refreshments gene - ouslv provided and served bj tho laaics. Tho singing of tho National Anthem brought tho function to a closo. MILLTOWN. At a meeting held in the Sunday school tho Milltown residents agreed to ° P ®“ Sunday school on Sunday next. Tor several years tho school has been ctoßed. but dur the past year a fee.ing has been browin that many children m the district who do not attend any Sunday school would welcome tho reopening. Two teachers were appointed—Mrs* J. Howatson and Miss Simpson the names of twenty-four children were riven in as scholars. A strong committee also formed. The Sunday school was first opened about forty years ago by tho Bov Mr Harper who wae tho vicar of the Soutlibridge pariah.
