SOUTH AFRICA.
NATIONALIST AIMS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. CAPE TOWN, October 4. After the principles on which alone the South Africa Party will accept reunion with the Nationalists had been adopted, the Congress at Paarl appointed a committee to confer with the Nationalists’ Committee. At the National Party’s Congress, a new clause in the party constitution was approved, which, however, will require approval by the other provincial Congresses before it becomes effective. This recognises without hesitation the existing relations of the South African Union and Britain, but affirms that the ultimate destiny of the people of South Africa must be full freedom ana sovereign independence. The party will therefore maintain the existing rights of the Union and develop them along constitutional lines, until South Africa is a self-standing nation, on an equal footing with Britain, and ultimately obtain full independence.. The party will oppose any policy tending to a close door against such independence. NO REUNION POSSIBLE. (Received October 6, 7.40 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, October 5. Negotiations for the reunion of the South African and Nationalist parties failed. Tho South African party committee appointed to meet the Nationalist committee reportod to tho Congress at Paarl that tho Nationalists insisted upon the right to agitate for a republic, regarding eventual independence as essential. The South Afriom party delegates refused to agree to this, and negotiations were thereupon broken off. Mr F. S. Malan moved the adoption of the committee’s report, pointing out that it would bo fatal to tear asunder the foundations of national development laid down by the Act of Union. Other speakers emphasised that .the only point at issue was tho British connection, about which there could be no compromise. The motion was unanimously adopted:
