SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Several candidates for the Dunedin Guineas were racing at tho liurow meeting yesterday, their performances being of widely divergent nature. Liuk Up won tho opening event, but bl.e field was not a good one, and she seemed to be stopping at the end. llusset, who finished third in the same race, showed some pace, but "cannot stay. A much better effort was tna; of Mustard Pot, who finished second in the liurow Handicap. All Britisu, another Guineas candidate, failed to show ufc in tho Trial Plato.

Kilkee, who was a little better backed than Borodino, was badly leu at the start of tho liurow Handicap yesterday, his chance being completely extinguished. Borodino, on the other hand, was always well placed, and k won decisively. He shaped well during the Grand National meeting, and he was well backed by southern sportsmen.

Tho Waitangi Steeplechase, at the Kurow meeting yesterday, was quite a comedy. Tho country was by no means difficult, but of tho six competitors only Rolling Tide and Traditor got round without mishap, though Handsome Boy was remounted and completed the course. A year ago at Kurow Rolling Tide was the only horse in the field who did not make a mistake, but he subsequently lost die stake when it vas found that the accident fee had not been paid for him.

Moutua, who won the Trial Plate at the Kurow meeting yesterday, was purchased as a yearling by tho late Mr C. W. Reid, and at his death a fewweeks later she was secured by the Riccarton trainer, F. D. Jones. She is a smart galloper, though she does not stay too well at present.

Hylans made his opponents in the Welter Hack Handicap at Kurow look b very poor lot, drawing away half a mile from home and never being in danger again. He won over hurdbs at Geraldine a week ago, and he.may earn further distinction among the jumpers at the Dunedin meeting next week.

Mr W. Norman, of Southland, who acted as starter at the Kurow meeti-ir yesterday, got most of his fields ofi well, but he wound up with 'a verv uneven dispatch in the Belfield Handicap, tho concluding event on the programme. Redshire and Bon Spec gained an advantage at the riso of the barrier, and nothing got near them Bon Spec was well clear before a furlong had been covered, but Redshire ranged alongside him a furlong from home. Bon Spec was nursed for a final effort, and finished well, but Redshire had a head advantage at the post. The race should l.enefit Bon Spec. This was his second defeat; the previous faihiro being in his first outing, since when he had won five times in succession. The following penalties have been announced by Mr J. E. .Henrys for the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting as a result of successes at tho Kurow fixture yesterday:—Electric Handicap— Redshire and Borodino. 51b each; Taioma Handicap—Link Up, 51b; October Welter Handicap—Borodino, 'slb. RANDWIOK TRAINING NOTES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, October 2. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October 2, 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 2. The final acceptances for the Derby include ten New Zealand horses; for the Epsom Stakes, nineteen, including Biplane; for the Metropolitan, thirty, including Finmark, Afterglow, Arch Marella and British Arch. The New Zealand horses are not faring too well. Out of six brought over by Mr Jones there are reported amiss Golden Bubble, who has split heels, and will probably miss the spring engagements; Spanner, sore; and Taunaha, unwell. Sasanof, Surveyor and Delight are all right. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. GENERAL MEETING- OP MEMBERS. A general meeting of tho Canterbury Jockey L/iub was iioiu yesterday, Mi A. iioy.e pretucung. Itutheriord, Mrs T. T. Tcschemoker. Mr W. H. E. Waakiyn was elected an honorary life member. Mr J. Wethered asked whether there wan any probability of a double totaiisator boing obtained. The chairman (Mr A. Boyle) said that tho matter lay with the Government entirely, but he noticed that Wellington and other clubs were pressing, the matter. The Canterbury Club had not mado any direct application, but there was a double totaiisator once, and it was taken away. He hoped ; that tho matter might ba pressed on tho i Government.

Mr Wethered also suggested that where there were nine or more horses running in a race a dividend should be paid on the third horse. Thiß, ho said, would encourage the investment of money on the totalizator, for the third horse waa often beaten by a very narrow margin. He hoped that where two or more horses from the same training 1 stable were running in a race they could be bracketed, irrespective of ownership. This also would be appreciated by the public, and it could not do the' winning owners any harm. Mr Boyle said that the matter might very well come before the committee. Mr Wethered said that there was a notable* instance where one trainer had three horses in a race. Somebody knew which waa the best of the three, but the public did not know, and might refrain from putting money on the totalisator because the horses were not bracketed. Mr C G. Dalgety said that the matter was rather one_ for the Bacing Conference. Mr Boyle said that the matter could go from the oommittee to the conference. Mr J. E. Maxwell said that all trotting clubs bracketed horses trained by the same person. KTTROW JOCKEY CLTJB. [Pee Phess Association.] OAMABTJ, October 2.
