His Excellency tho Governor-General arrived in Christchurch by the's.B p.m. express yesterday, and went on to Wellington. Lieutenant-Colonel L. P. Sleeman, arrived in Christchurch from tho south last night.

Tho Mayor (Dr Thaekor, M.P.), has postponed his departure for Wellington, and will not go north before tomorrow night or possibly next Tuesday night. * Messrs W. S. Helem and J. More have been nominated for the vacancy on the Hampstead Town Board caused by the resignation of Mr R. Loy. An election will be held in duo course.

Sir James Allen, Minister of Finance, arrived from Wellington yesterday and went south by tho mddoay express. Tho trip has been undertaken as a break from the strain of Parliamentary duties. ' The Rev J. A. Ryburn, brother of ao Rov R. M. Ryburn, of St Andrew's, Christclurch, will arrive at Wellington to-day from Sydney, and will bo in Christchurch to-morrow. He has been engaged for some time in missidnary work in the Punjab, India. •Mr R. S. Forsyth, manager of the Ashburton branch of the National Mortgago and Agency .Company of New Zealand, Ltd., has received notice of his transfer to tho Timaru branch, to tak'o effect in about two months. Mr Forsyth will be succeeded by Mr W. C. Brydon, manager of the Waimato branch.

Mr W 7. 11. E. Wanklyn, who has just relinquished the secretaryship of the Canterbury Jockey Club, was yesterday elected an honorary life member of tho club. Mr A. Boyle, the president, said that during Mr Wanklyn's term of twenty-eight years the club had taken great strides, and from year to year the work had become more onerous, especially in regard to the working of the totalisator. This had boon brought to a state of perfection, and it was run at a lower cost than was the case with any other club in the Dominion. Mr Wanklyn's services had been of benefit to the sport, and had been performed to the satisfaction of the committee.

Mr J. H. Smith, who is severing his connection with the clerical staff of the Ashburton railway station, and is also leaving the service, was met by the staff on Wednesday evening and presented with an illuminated address. The stationmaster (Mr J. T. Bell) made the presentation, and wished Mr Smith a happy time in his well-earned retirement. Mr Smith has served forty years with the Department. He had been nine .years on superannuation, until the thinning of the ranka of the railway for war service, when ho offered his services to the Department "for the period of tho war, and has been over two years at Ashburton. Mr Jno. J. Ardagh. dentist, who recently returned from active service in France, has secured rooms over Messrs Standish and Preeee's. in High Street, and will recommence practice on Monday next, October 6. 3793
