MAGISTRATE’S COURT

CHRISTCHURCH. Messrs T. E. Fraser, J.P., and W. H Seed, J.P., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. A first offender was fined 6s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Jas- Sutton, a third offender, was fined £l, in default fourteen days imprisonment. Thomas Nolan pleaded, guilty to a charge of stealing a pair of sandals •valued at 6s Gd, the property of J. Reynolds. Accused said this was his first act of dishonesty, and he asked for another chance. He was convicted and discharged) and a prohibition lorder was issued against him. 1 Elizabeth Riley pleaded not guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in that she did habitually consort with undesirable characters. After hearing the evidence of Constables Sheehan and Le Seuer, and after perusing accused’s record, the. Bench sentenced her to one month’s imprisonment. LYTTELTON. Mr S. E. M’Carthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. John Lionel Baker was charged with stealing an overcoat and sundry pape-s, the property of Albert Buckley. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch on Monday. . Owen G- Bird, for a breach of a prohibition order, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. William Fox, for a similar offence, was similarly dealt with, Robert Haydon, for a. second offence of breach of a prohibition order, fined £7, in default a month’s imorisonment. Walter Harper, for a similar Offence, was similarly dealt with. Albert John Liston (Mr Kincaid) was charged with inciting a man named Thompson to resist the police on April 24. Constable Smith stated that as he and Constable Joyce were taking a prisoner to the lockup, the prisoner offered resistance. A crowd gathered, '■ and defendant booed the police. Hie prisoner then resisted violently. Prior to Liston booing the. police Thompson did not give more trouble than the usual drunk man. Constable Joyce tave corroborative evidence. To Mr iincaid: He did not kick Thompson. Detective Quartermain stated that there had been no complaint by anyone of ill-treating- Thompson. For the defence, Liston stated that he noticed Thompson straggling and heard the prisoner complain to the police that they, were breaking his arms. Later he saw Thompson on lhe ground and saw .Constable Joyce Vick Thompson with his left foot. He complained of the treatment to a 'ystnnder, and then walked away. He did not boo-hoo the police and he did no if know Thompson. The Magistrate stated that ho could not accept Liston’s statements with regard to the police, and imposed a fine of £5, in default. ono month’s imprisonment.

John Fry. for being absent withdut leave from his vessel, the Port Alma, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
