SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES The response _ ma-do by owners last night was sufficiently liberal to justify the belief that tho Autumn meeting of tho Canterbury Jockey Club wil’ produce some excellent sport. Sc far as the principal events are concerned, tho prospects are particularly bright. Some good horses have dropped out of the two big handicaps, but few of the defections caused muoh surprise, thojte still holdiug their gronna including practically all the early fancies. A specially plea-sing feature 01 the acceptance lists is that tho horses a.re drawn from all parts of the Dominion. Tile North Island claims eight representatives in the Great Easter and six in the Great Autumn, Canterbury stables claim sevon and five respectively, while Otago and Southland owners have four m the seven-furlongs race and three in the mile and a 'half. With the horses drawn from 6uch a wide area, there should ho plenty of interest in both events. Sasnnof. Gay Lad and Bon Spec are tho most popular selections at present for tho Great Easter Handicap, while Glendower is the ruling favourite for the Great Autumn Handicap. The opinion lms been expressed in more than one quarter lately that with Surveyor -standing in tho wav the Canterbury Jockey Club was not likely to secure a big field for this season’s Champagne Stakes. It, seems probable, however, that the Yaldliurst crack will encounter fair opposition ou Easter Monday. Miss Mimio and Royal Stag are progressing well iu their training at Ricoarton, and though Surveyor appears to hold them safe, tho better of the pair should give him a decent race. Rossini, a brother to Soldiers Chorus, Tnnnhauser and Cherubini, lias not raced yet, and interest in him will be aroused chiefly bv his prospects in the future. Hetaua lias some good performances to his credit lately .and Warplane shaped well, enough, in tho spring to suggest great possibilities, which he has failed to realise up till now. Sunnrb is a winner in moderate company, and he is a gelding who should bo capable of much improvement- The best of tho two-year-olds also figure in the Challenge Stakes, in which Gloaming will serve to thoroughly test their merits. Some of the minor events at the Autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club have attracted decent nominations, but there are others that have a. very disappointing appearance. Tho hurdle races nave filled quite up to expectations but the fioldß in tho Autumn Plate, Sockburn Handicap and Courtenay Welter Handicap, on the first day will bo small, while some of the. races on tho second dav may. be expected to dwindle down. The visiting division is fairly well represented in most of the events, however, and if the outsiders put in an appearance they will ensnro plenty of interest in tho sport. Work on tho Greymouth Trotting Club’s ground is going on rapidly, and it is now almost certain the new course and appointments will be ready for the club’s meeting in October. During the war tho work was carried on by the caretaker and his staff, and fair progress was made under the supervision of tho committee. Now it is understood tho architect for the alternations ha 3 a largo staff at work, and everything is moving along at top speed. Marching Order, who waa successful at the Southland Racine: Club’s meeting last week, is the first of the progeny of Soldiers’ Chorus to win a race. Affectation, the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Stakes this week, is a two-year-old colt by lulbroney from tho imported mare Simper. Ho showed promise in tho spring, and though he fniled to win a race until midsummer, he haa now credited his owner with four decent stakes. His win at Hastings appears to have been accomplished in very attractive stylo, and lie may have to he reckoned with In important events for which two-year-olds are eligible later in the season.

Hetaua, who won tho Nursery Handicap at Hastings on Wednesday and ran third on the following day in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, has been one of tho best two-year-old performers of the present season, haring won four times, besides being placed iu four other races. Ho is by Demosthenes from Fairy Gold, a sister to Gold Grest, by Gold Reef—Nymph. Lingerie and Impediment, two members of the team whioh J, Cameron took to Melbourne early in tho season, were backed heavily at Mentone last month, but both of them let their admirers down badly, Impediment finishing last in a field of four.
