MONTHLY MEETING. A monthly meeting of th© Canterbury Education Board was held yesterday; present—Messrs W. A. Banks (chairman), John Jamieson, J. Mazo, A. Peverill, C. H. Opie, T. Hughes, O. S. The New Brighton Committee made an application for an additional teacher owing to the increased attendance. The matter was left with the ohairman and secretary. A recommendation was received from the Agriculture Committee, that no secondary assistant should be appointed to a district high school who was unable to teach at lenst two of the special rural course subjects. It was decided that the matter should be brought under the notice of the inspectors. The report was adopted. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE.

The Buildings Committee reported that the Ohertsey Committee had applied for a grant towards the erection, of a shelter shed, estimated to cost about £BO. It was decided that halfoost, up to £ls, should be granted, a subsidy to bo claimed, on the amount raised locally. The Hampstead Committee forwarded a petition from the householders of Netherby, asking for the purchase of a site for a school. It was resolved that residents should be asked to supply further information. As tho Department granted £203 for the purchase of the new site for the Mount Somers School, less a certlain sum being the estimated proceeds of the sale of a portion of the old site, and also £463 towards the erection fof a new school, it was decided that the new building should bei erected as Koon as possible. The Waimato Committee applied for the erection of two additional class rooms to provide extra accommodation in the primary and secondary departments. It was decided that tho committee should be informed that., according to the floor space, there was ample accommodation In both departments for the present average attendance. The Timiiru South Committee asked that two class rooms on the open-air system should be erected to provide additional accommodation. It was decided to ask the assistant architect to submit to next meeting a plan of a detached building of two rooms on the open-air principle. The Cashmere Committee applied for a grant towards the cost of asphalting at the school, the amount expended on this work being £137. A grant of £SO was made. The Prebbleton Committee applied for the condemnation of the teacher’s residence. The architect reported that this residence was built in 1864, tin timber mostly being white pine and it was full of the borer and dry-rot. He recommended that the building be condemned and a new residence erected on a fresh site, as the land on which the school and residence stood contained onlv two ncros. It was recommended that application should ho made to the Department for the condemnation of the residence. . , Th.o Hornby Committee asked that the board’s architect should supervise the erection of the memorial water tower at the Hornby School. Tho application was granted. The Department wrote granting £6OO towards the purchase of three acres of land as an addition to the Shirley School. It was reported that the siirvey of the site would be made shortly, and a plan would be handed to the hoard in the course of a few days. The Shirley Committeo asked for the erection of additional accommodation at the school. The inspector . reported that if tho question of erecting more class rooms could bo held over fop a short, time, probably the school would oualify for three rooms It was recommended that the inspector s report should he sent to the School CommitTho Sumner Committeo reported that it was willing to raise £2OO towards the cost 0* the erection of three class rooms. It was resolved that a copy of the letter ho sent to the» Dopnrtment with the request that three rooms ho erected, while necessary alterations to the old infant room should bo carried out. ... „ ~ Four members of tho bouth Now Brighton Burgesses’ Association had waited upon the Buddings Committeo regarding the establishment of a Ride school nt South New Brighten. They asked that tho »de whool should bo erected nearer the main school than the oropoced site m the South New Brighton Domain, and tor 'temporary accommodation to meet present requirements. Tt was decided that the a*. mciation should he informed that the hoard was endeavouring to _ obtain n. site in the South Now Breton Domnin, and that it should apply through the school eommittco tor temporary accommodation. AGRICULTURE. The conditions in connection with the M’Fnrlnne Shield competition were reused nnd the following additions and alterations were 3 i that the M’Farlane Shield be awarded to the school showing the test agricultural results in tho i fch e judging to be done on the following basis: No. 4, that three prizes to the value of £3, £2, £1 be given to scnools for the

greatest improvement in the conduct of the school gardens during tho year, 'narks to be allotted on tho same basis and compared with the previous year’s marks; No. 3a, sub-heading, “Caro of Tools,” 50 marks bo given, making a jptnl of 550 marks. The report was adopted. MANUAL AND TECHNICAL. A letter was received from the Lyttelton Borough Council offering a sifco on_ which to erect a manual training buijding. Tho land was valued at £250. It was resolved that tho secretary should bo instructed to write and thank the council. An endeavour would be made to erect a suitable building. Plans for the Phillipstown manual training building were submitted nnd approved. The architect was instructed to call for tenders for the work immediately. The instructress in domestic science at Sydenham, Miss Ponder, sent in her resignation. It was resolved that her resignation should be accepted with regret. The report was adopted. NORMAL SCHOOL OOMDHTTEE. The Normal School Committee’s roport referred to the Department’s letter conveying the Minister’s approval of tho appointment of Mr J. E. Purchas, M.A., as principal of the Christchurch Training College. The committeo resolved to reaffirm tho desirability ns already expressed by the board of Mr Purchas visiting schools abroad at an early date. It was agreed that tho appointment of Mr Purchas should date from April 1 and his present position be advertised at once. The committeo expressed their approval of the class formed by the women students for the study and practice of home nursing, in which connection two qualified nurses, the Misses Mulcock, had given their services for instruction. Tho class had been formed in view of - the possible recrudescence of the influenza epidemic. Leave of absence wag granted to Miss E. Grand (three weeks) aud Miss C- L Pattrick (October 1). Tho report was adopted. SUPPLIES COMMITTEE. The Supplies Committee _ reported that a letter had been received from the Department, reporting that the Minister had under consideration the question of the establishment of a central store for tho purchase of school stationery, etc. The following resolution had been carried: “That the board has had this matter under consideration during Hie period of the war and has now nrrived at the stage of carrying out tho proposal to establish its own store and supply at wholesale prices to the children. In the meantime it cannot therefore favour the establishment of a Government central store.” It had been agreed to supply the Department with particulars of the present method of procuring the distributing material. Tho report was adopted. KAIKOURA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. The report of the sub-committee appointed to visit Kaikoura district to confer with the local authorities with regard to tho efficient maintenance of the District High School and to promote arrangements for building a new technical school at Kaikoura. stated that the committee was satisfied that everything that could bo devised to promote and maintain the attendance of pupils in the District High School had been done*by the local authorities. At a representative meeting of local educational authorities, local bodies, parents and others interested various speakers had emnhasised the local difficulties —withdrawal of pupils through the age limit, irregulai attendance, the difficulty of conveyance, etc.—but earnest sympathy and support and suggestions'for future efforts to enlist pupils were forthcoming. The committee believed that interest in tho District High School and in secondary education had been stimulated, that measures suggested to improve the attendance and attainments of the upper standards would be taken and that the question of raising the leaving age of pupils would receive serious consideration. MISCELLANEOUS. The suggestion of the Wellington Education Board that the postponed conference of education boards .should bo held in Wellington some time in June was agreed to, the local board’s delegates being Messrs Banks, Bignell, Hughes, Lane and tho Hon J.*Grimmend. Accounts amounting to £1768 14s 2d were passed for payment.
