MARKET REPORTS.

SCARGILL EWE FAIR. The annual ewe fair at Scargill and tho first of the season in North Canterbury was held yesterday. There was a good attendance of the farmers of the district, but buyers from a distance were few. Tho entry was smaller than usual, the close proximity of. the Ambcrley fair being in a measure accountable for tho shortage. The total yarding of owes was 2349 and of lambs 926. Excepting for sheep of good quality, the bidding was slack, but in several instances the lines of tho better class were passed in. It was obvious that the dry weather had a most depressing effect on the sale, as out of thirty-two lots offered fourteen were passed. The best sales mado were on account of Mr S. B. Gibb, namely, 131 twotooth half-bredl Corriedale ewes at 40s, 181 eight-tooth at 24s 3d, and 104 two-tooth three-quarter-bred owes at 335, tho whole being purchased by Mr B. Ferguson, of Flaxton, to go on his farm in the Waikari district. These prices wero from 2s to 8s under thoso of last year's _ sale, and the offerings for some of tho lines passed in wero up to 5s lower than the quotation for similar sheep sold last year.
