A distinctive war-time development in English industry has been tho establishment of women police forces in factories where women are employed. They have multifarious duties, and perform them very effectively, according to reliable information to the Department of Labour. Tho women police began their career in the summer of 1916, when it became evident that further measures were needed for tho supervision of women in munitions work than had been adopted up to that time. The women police examine passports, check tho workers a.s they enter the factories, search for such contraband articles as matches, cigarettes and alcohol, patrol the factory neighbourhood and assist the Police Court magistrates. The patrol is a highly important feature of their service, for many of these plants are located in lonely spots, and practically all of them aro going full blast night and day. Even within tho factory enclosures, the police women are needed, for theso are in some instances six miles long, and women making explosives often work in. isolated huts at long distances from other structures. So valuable has the work of the police women proved that their retention in industry after the war, as long as conditions necessitate the employment of women under present conditions or conditions approximately similar, is fully expected.
