QUESTION OF A SUCCESSOR
[FBOM OVB CoRHESrOXDENT.]
WELLINGTON, November 21
Mr Evan Parry, who for a good many years past has been chief Govern- I meufc electrical engineer, has resigned j his position to tako up what is said tc bo a very important appointment in | London- It is understood that Mr Parry will remain in New Zealand ior two or three months longer, but there is no prospect that his services will be retained for the Dominion. The Minister of Public Works declined this morning to make any announcement on the subject, and will reserve what he has to say for the Houso. The appointment of Mr Parry s successor is a matter of very great importance, for it is understood that in addition to extending tho Lake Coleridge installation in the near future tlie Government intends to launch out on a huge scheme of hydro-electrical installations in the N ith Island. It is generally thought in Wellington that Mr Lawrence Birks will have a good chance of securing the appointment, as ho has worked continuously under Mr Parry, and ' las " a d charge of the biggest installation in Now Zealand, namely, the Lako Coleridge works, while he has also a grasp of the administrative details of the Government's undertakings in regard to electricity.
