CLOSING OF BANKS.
SIR JOSEPH WARD'S EXPLANATION. [Per Prkss Association.] WELLINGTON, November 22. In answer to protests against the closing of banks, Sir Joseph Ward declares that it was absolutely necessary on account of depleted staffs and because or the congregation of people there, spreading disease. " They simply had to be closed," he added, "because they could not carry on."
