At a meeting of the Tai Tapu Patrio* tic Society on Monday evening it was' decided not to hold any public meeting in celebration of the expected 'signing of the armistice, on account of the influenza epidemic. However, on Tuesday, when'the news did arrive, it was not found so easy to restrain the feelings of residents after the events of. the last four years. A, procession' of motor-cars, led by a decorated traction engine, made some noise, and _ such “instruments” as accordions, whistles', bells, petrol tins, etc., were .much in evidence. A bonfire heap was erected, and at night a large gathering was entertained with fireworks. Captain Macartney, chairman, arid other, members of the Patriotic Society addressed those present.
