CHMSTCHU'RCH. Mr S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Michael Alylrea, a second offender for, drunkenness, was lined 10s, in detauit forty-eight hours' imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay 10s expenses. Nellie Lynch, who appeared on remand to answor a charge, of drunkenness, was convicted and ordered to come up tor sentence when called upon, on the proviso that she remained in the Mount Magdala Home for two years. . John Clark, charged with indecent assault at Green Island, was remanded to appear at Dunedin on November 15. Ellen Norris, a widow, was charged with stealing goods value £1 13s (3d, the property of Mrs Gregory, and also with stealing goods value £l, the property, of Lily Brown. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges. On the application of Sub-Inspector Mullauy accused was remanded until Friday. The Magistrate delivered reserved judgment in the case in which John Gibson Wood, licensee of the Zetland Arms Hotel, was charged with having sold liquor after hours, and with having exposed liquor for sale after hours. In connection with these charges, John Freeman, the barman, was charged with having sold liquor after hours. #Mr Cassidy appeared for Wood. At the hearing Freeman pleaded .guilty, but the imposition of a penalty was deferred until judgment was delivered in the esse of Wood. After reviewing the evidence and the legal argument submitted, the Magistrate said that the circumstances suggested the ■ inference that Wood knew that after-hour tnidii'.g was being carried on. The defendant would bo convicted and fined £lO and costs on the first charge. The license would not be endorsed. The second charge was withdrawn. Freeman was convicted and discharged. LYTTELTON. Mr F. G. Norton, J.P., presided at a sitting of the Lyttelton Magistrates Court yesterday, when Augustus Frederic Wnitbrook, charged with the theft between January 20 and November 29, 1917, of £627 0s 2d. the property of P. Graham, of *Chri,stchur,ch, was further remanded to appear at Christchurch on November 20, bail being allowed in one security of £250, and accused recognisance in a similar amount. Herbert Reynolds was charged with' failing to answer questions put by a constable . under the Military Service Act. The accused was remanded to appear at Christchurch on November 20.
