NEWS AND NOTES. The annual meeting of the Canter* bury Trotting Horse Breeders and Owners' Association, called for, last night, has been postponed for a fortnight. The illness of the secretary, Mr G. S. Simpson, who is one of the in* fluenza victims, is tho chief reason !for this step. Great sympathy will be felt for Mr H. Tinker, the well-known horse dent-ist,-in the trouble that has overtaken him in the death of his wife, which occurred this week at her residence at Riccarton. The deceased lady, whoso death followed on an attack of influenza, leaves a family of young children. Mr Tinker is still seriously ill with tho prevailing epidemic. The pacer Ouimet, who has not raced since last June, is shortly to bo put into work again, and he will in future be trained by F. Holmes. Quinnet was a promising pacer, who was unlucky in his racing efforts last season, as he failed to win a race, although •frequently placed The Auckland Racing Club's handicapper, Mr F. M'Manemin, is a victim to the prefailing epidemic, and Mr H. Cbyle framed the weights for the spring meeting. Following this Mr Ooyle was struck down with tho malady. „ Gladful made a bold hid for victory in the Mount Albert Steeplechase, and had he fenced a little better would have given the winner, Tirau, considerably more trouble. As it was, he got to within three lengths of him, which was a good performance under 12st 121 b. The showing of Bobrikoff's half-bro-ther Kipling at" Avondale was very poor, and too bad to be true. Thd son of Demosthenes has plenty of pace, but failed to show up at any part, and probably owing to the fact tnat nis trainer has been on the sick list ever since his arrival in Auckland, ihe coit was a bit above himself.
