OBITUARY.

MATHEW NAISMITH. Mathew Naismitli, a very old resident, was laid to rest in the Springfield Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The late Mr Naismitli was a* native of Shettlestone, near Glasgow, and arrived in New Zealand on Christmas Day, 1874, in the ship Geraldine Paget. Soon after his arrival ho settled in Springfield, and was employed by the late Mr A. Reid, of Russell's Flat, in opening up a coal seam on tho Dalethorpo Run, and afterwards in assisting Captain Parker in prospecting for coal on tho property afterwards worked by the Springfield Coal Company.. Tho late Mr Naismitli was for many years a member of tho School Committee and an elder of tho Presbyterian Church. His humorous Scotch readings wore always a welcome part of any entertainment. He has left a widoWj two sons, four daughters and fifteen grandchildren..
