NAVY DAY

A SUCCESSFUL STREET APPEAL. The appeal conducted in the streets of the city yesterday by tne Navy League, assisted by other organisations, in aid of the dependents of men who have, lost their lives in the naval service of the .bmpire, was heid under exceptionally favourable auspices. The weatner was line if a trifle cnilly, and the hew*, of Turkey's unconditional surrender Had put citizens into quite the rignt frame ot mind lor generous giving. From an early hour in .the morning the streets were patrolled by young lady collectors, appropriately costumed, and the sale of badges was brisk. Five relays of collectors were arranged ioi, these returning to tho headquarters at tlie Chamber of Commerce at 11 a.m., l.rfO p.m., 4 p.m. «J. 30 p.m. and 9 p.m. respectively. Many attractively cleooiated stalls were e&tablished in Oatiiedral bquare, and these, together with a fair modicum of minor undertakings and side-shows, were well patronised. An impromptu stage was erected in Cathedral iSquare, in fronv of the United Service Hotel, and here enjoyable entertainments were given, ai fresco by Mr A's Concert Party, the Fisk Jubilee Singers and artists from the Opera House, under the direction of the Rev D. Schloss. Special moneygetting efforts were the ralile of a Sunbeam motor-car, presented by Mr E. S. Luttrell, and a magnificent vase of 80-: hemian glass presented by_ Mr James Jamieson. The Sumner lifeboat and crew, and squads of British and American sailors, took part in the day's collections with much success. At noon, using the Sumner lifeboat Rescue as a rostrum, the president of tho Navy League (Mr A. Boyle) and the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) delivered brief and vigorous addresses in Cathedral Square on the work ot tht> Navy and the debt owed by the Empire to the dependents of tho naval heroes who died in the course of their duty. There was a large crowd and applause waa frequent. After the speeches cheers were given for the speakers and for the Navy, and a tarpaulin collection in an American flag realised a handsome sum. Neate; in charge of badges, Mrs Hamilton; in charge of permits and locality boards, Misses D. E. Taylor and F. White and Messrs J. Bowler and J. B. Laurenson; refreshments for helpers, Mrs C. G. Dalgety and assistants; secretary, Mr C. J. Treleaven. Book and China Stall—(Women's National Reserve), Mesdames W. Wood and Evans and Miss Cox; sweets, Misses Ferguson, Reading, Warner, Munro and Bennett; Christmas presents, Mrs Treleaven, Miss L. Bishop and Mr R. C. Bishop; flowers, Mesdames J. G. Wilson and Anderson and Miss Wilson; variety, MesdamesWyles, Foster, Dougall and Mountfort and Miss Mandel; cakes (Ladies' Seamen's Guilds), Lady Denniston (Cashmere), Mrs Blunt (city) and Mrs Malcolm (Opawa); produce, Mesdames P. Overton, F. Davey and A. Merton. Captain Colonna's periscope was on exhibition.
