THE NEWS IN THE CITY. PUBLIC SATISFACTION. The news of Turkey's surrender wa| = received in Christchurch shortly afte* nine o'clock yesterday morning. A small "dodger" was" immediately is- ' sued by. the "Star," and this gave the . |" first public intimation of the gieat - event. This was followed by a special issuo at midday. By a fortunate coincidence it was "Navy Day»" and the ,• Square was quite gaily beffagged. Flags were flown at most of the city flagstaffs and over all there was a feeling ■ of great thankfulness that a further || great step towards final victory had §1 been achieved. There was an enthusiastic demonatrai m tion in Cathedral Square at noon when ,' the Mayor, addressing a gathering On ;> behalf of the Navy League's War Fund | appeal, announced the surrender ol | Turkey and the further news that tha Allied Fleet had passed through tha m Dardanelles. Hearty cheers were given, ; and the Mayor expressed the opiuion •, that peace Avas not now far distant, . Tho Cathedral bells pealed out merrily; for about an hour on receipt of *b»" § news. PUBLIC CELEBRATIONS. It h re« quested that whistles and sirens should | bo blown and bells rung at noon. Public holidays will be observed at < Lyttelton (from noon to-day), and aft Ambarley (Momlay all day) in celebration of the Turkish surrender.
