NEWS AND NOTES. ! H. Gutts arrived home by yesterday's steamer 1 from Wellington, with Adjutant, Onslaught, Lionskin, Royal btag and Strathglass. r \ A Press Association message from Melbourne states that there are seven acceptors for the V.R.C Derby, inchiding Finmark and Killowen. The Wingatui trainer, 0. Gieseler, who has been on a trip north with some of his team, assisting at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, put in an appearance at Riccarton yesterday with Seddel Bahr, Royal Star, Sleepy Head and Marjery. Rose Pink, Arihia, Bagdad and Meli arrived from the north yesterday to fulfil engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting-next week.

The two-year-old filly Link Un is slightly amiss, and she was not worked yesterday. The trouble is not serious, but it may bo found advisable to forfeit her engagements at Riccarton next week.

Nautville, the Sanquhar two-year-old inG. Murray-Aynsley's stable, is anunlikely starter at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting next week;, oho has shown signs of soreness lately, and she will probably have, an easy time until it disappears. Loch Weir, who has been on the easy list for a few weeks, following on a alight accident, rejoined H'. Ellis's active division. His tasks have been restricted to-, short sprints so far, but he appears to have made a good recovery from his mishap. Owing to tho rain which fell overnight tlie race track at Addington was not open for training work yesterday, and the training track was so wet that fast work was impossible on it. A good many horses. appeared on the course, but few wont on the track. The fcrofcter Koraki, in saddle, and the pacer Puwhenua, in harness, went a little over a mile and a half on the extreme outside of the track, which was, in the best condition. . They travelled' at '* solid speed, both horses movng freely. Rearguard, in saddle, did nearly three rounds, but did not seem to like the wet track. Tho pacer Scbhapps> without the hopples, went nearly two miles at about half-speed. The diminutive pacer looks very well, and was ridden by E. ,M'Dermott. The West Coaster, Fernlcigh, in harness, paced several circuits at half-speed, and was then trotted a similar distance. >

Final paynients and fteeeptahce* in; connection wi.tli the Canterbury Jockey' Club's meeting were dne last night, but on account of telegraphic interruptions the time has, been iextended till noon to-day.

. Though Gloaming is popularly regarded as a certainty for the Derby, to ba decided on Monday, it fs reporte i that he will not bo a competitor in tho Canterbury Cup. In his absence, the older division, including Client. Menelaus, Sasanof and Snub, would have much better prospeots, but Kilmoon's form at ffentham makes him look a three-year-old of useful class.

Snub i 3 credited with running a surprisingly good race in the Champion Plate at Trentham, and as a result the Martian gelding has gained some fresh admirers for the New Zealand, Cup, a race , ini which he has'twice been placed.
