NAVY DAY.
TO-DAY'S STREET APPEAL. To-day the Navy League is making its big street appeal in aid of the widows and orphans and other dependents of tho Empire's naval heroes, and those injured in naval service. A comprehensive fair will be held in Cathedral SquarOj and there will be stalls of all descriptions—produce, 1 horticultural plants, cakes, sweets, books, and china will bo among tho numerous items listed for sale. Variety and novelty stalls will provide further opportunities for the'Unloosening of; pursestrihgs. A. periscope will bo on exhibition, showing tho principal used in the submarines. At noon the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) wilPgive an address on the subject "The Debt We Owe to the Navy," and from midday to 5.15 p-m. a series'of concerts will. take place, among the performers being members of the Fisk Jubilee Singers and Fuller's Opera House Company. An innovation in the collecting task will bo the provision of a stall fully equipped with cheques, pn every hank, and the organisers announce that "all you ha«vo _to do is to come to the stall and write your cheque." A special' feature of the appeal will be the presence of two teams of sailors from vessels now in port, who will parade with the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes respectively. A team of girls from the Harbour lights Club, Lyttelton, will also collect with a flag,
