MAGISTRATE'S' COURT.

CHEISTCHUROH. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Lauresty Neilson, charged with riding a motor-cycle by night without lights, was fined 20s and costs "Cecil Ellis and James Suteliffo, for cycling by night without lights, were each fined 2s, without costs. William Leeney, who did not appear, was fined 15s and costs for a similar offence. Emerson Bo'wes, jun., was fined 10a and costs for driving a motor-car by night without lights. For depositing wood in Rugby Street by night, without having a light on the wood. Joseph Barron, who did not appear, was fined 03 and costs. For failing to attend parade in uniform Henry Bush was fined 10s and costs. J On charges of failing to attend drill, 1 John Muir was fined 40s and costs; Ernest Albert Michael and Ashley B. Murray were fined 20s and costs; Percival Roy Greenfield, Major Harris, Clarence John Larsen, Harry Herbert Pearce, Colin M Kenzie Taylor, Norman T. White, Frederick William Wliittell and Tiora Wilson wero each fined 10s and costs; Harry R. Atkinson and Harold Ernest William Dempleton were each fined 5s and costs. Victor G. B. Wilkins and John Timaru Foster were each convicted and discharged, and a charge against lan M'Laren Lilley (Mr Rowe) was dismissed , after evidence had been heard. A charge of failing to attend drill against Crdric John Gerard was dismissed after defendant's statement had born heard. Archibald Major Burnside (Mr Cassidy), a lad nineteen years of age. who appeared on remand, was charged that on April 6 he broke and entered the shop of Ernest William Christiansen, in Manchester Street, and stole 5s in money and goods to the value of 4 s lOd. Chief Detective M'Uveney., who conducted the case for the police, said that the accused had been traced by finger prints found on «. piece of class from the pane of a window, which was broken when the entry was effected. Evidence was given also by Ernest William Christiansen. Detective-Ser-geant Gibson', Constable Harvey, William Henry Simister, of the Criminal Registration Branch. Wellington, and Plain-clothes Constable Le Seuer. This closed the ease for the police. Accused pleaded guilty n-nd was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence, bail being fixed at £SO and one surety of £SO. ASHBURTON. Mr V. G. Day, S.M.. presided at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday, A. W. Robins, James Gooseman and D. O'Sullivan were each fined 20s and costs for exceeding the speed limit with motor-cars. A similar charge against Mrs J. R. Rulyins was adjourned. John Shearer (Mr Kennedy)) (was fined 10s, with costs 275, on a charge of negligently driving a motor-car, which collided with and capsized a buggy driven by Mrs Stoddart, and threw her and her daughter out on to the road. In a civil caso, Albert Betts (Mr Buchanan) v. R. M'Callum, as trustee in the estate of the late Dennis Betts (Mr Kenendy), claim £l6 12s 3d, judgment was given for plaintiff with costs. In C. Childs v. James Hyland, claim £1 13s 6d, judgment was for defendant. Thomas Pennell (Mx Acland) claimed from Oliver Blaokler (Mr Buchanan) the sum of £45 in connection with the growing and sale of potatoes. Judgment was given for tho plaintiff for £B, with costs £1 16s.
