SPORTING. NEWS AND NOTES. In view of the fact that his trainer, 11. D. O'Donnelh was liable for military service, Mr G. L. Stead had practically abandoned the intention of sending any horses to Australia this year to take part in the spring meetings. 0 Donnell was rejected by the Medical Board last week, however, and Mr Stead has nowrevised his plans, having decided to be represented at the, spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Olub by a couple of three-year-olds. Almoner, who won the Breeders' Plate in Sydney last sprin" will be sent over with a view to contesting the Derby, while Kilmoon will go as a companion to assist the crack in his training and to take part in minor events. According to present intentions, O'Donnell, with the two colts under his care, will be a passenger on the next eteamer for Sydney. The pacer Our Thorpe has finished his racing career and will do stud duty in the Gore district this season. Before linally retiring from the track, however, his owner. Mr A. Fleming, has decided to send his horse against the Australasian mile record, 2min 6 2-ssec, held bv Adelaide Direct. Arrangements for the trial are now well in hand, and if the weather conditions .are suitable it will take place on the Metropolitan Trottina Club's course at Addmgton at nine o'clock to-morrow morning.. Koraki was omitted from both trotting events in the list of nominations for the Amberley Racing Club's annual meeting, published on Saturday. Raleigh should be Walter Raleigh, Greta should read Delta, and Sweet Kathleen should be Sweet Kalethan. It is understood that Mr G. L. Stead purchased the steeplechaser Collector at the close of the Grand National meeting. The weather conditions were very pleasant while training operations were in progress at Riccarton on Saturday. The tracks were in excellent order, the inside of the trial grass providing fast going. It was freely taken advantage of by trainers, who are now busy getting their teams ready for spring engagements. Tho Amberley Racing Club has secured a fine list of nominations for the meeting to be held next month. The Amberley Cup has drawn a particularly good response, class being strongly in evidence. Most of the Riccarton stables are represented, and the fixture promises to provide a very successful opening for the flat racing season in the South Island. ADELAIDE RACING CLUB.
