NEWS AND NOTES. Miss M. Kennedy (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs Vincent (Parnassus) are staying at the Federal. Mrs Frank Collins has gone to Wellington for a few days. Mr and Mrs Masters (Auckland) are in town. Miss Chaffey returned to Christ- j church yesterday after a holiday spent in the North Island. ,1 Lieutenant- and Mrs George Chapman have gone to Akaroa for a few weeks' holiday. Mrs Marmaduke Bethell has returned to Pahau Pastures after a fortnight in town. Mr and Mrs R. A. Anderson (Inrcrcargill) arrived in Christchurch. yesterday morning from the north. Mrs and Miss Shacklock (Dunedin) and Miss Henderson arrived in Christchurch on Thursday, and are staying at the Clarendon. Mrs B L. B'unden has returned to Waikari, accompanied by Miss Rita Moss, | Wellington, who will be her guest for some time. > s The weekly meeting of the Avonside Division of the St John Ambulance was held on Thursday evening, Mrs Rhodes, lady superintendent, bemg_ in charge. Members received instruction in drill and were subsequently examined by the ! officers in first aid. ! j Members of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf CKib played a flag match yesterday afternoon for a prize presented by Mrs Green. The winner was Mrs Richards. ! An enjoyable concert wes given in St I Margaret's Schoolroom on Thursday ! evening in aid of the Melanesian Mission. The school hall was filled, and the audience was most appreciative. ■ Homemade sweats were sold by soma of St Margaret's pupils. Thosq contributing towards tha programme were:—Mre J. Russell, Mr 3 Gray, Miss Lilian Wauchop, Sirs J. Guthrie, Miss Bethune, Miss Amos, Miss , Johnson, Miss Ross, Miss Black, Mrs land Miss Bowker ai>d Mr Sidney Williamson. On Wednesday Akaroa celebrated its first reiurned soldier's wedding, when ex-Trooper Auguste O. O. Lelievre, youngest son of Air A. J. Lelievre, of Gougn's Bay. married Miss Myrtle v . Piper, only daughter of Mr H. W. Piper, of the Madeira Hotel, Akaroa. The ceremony was performed by the Rev A. H. Julius in St Peter's Church. Tho bride, who was given away by her father, wore a most becoming putty coloured costume faced with cream and oriental trimming, and a rose coloured hat with bronze poppies. She carried a- beautiful bouquet of pink camelias, violets and freezias with autumn leaves and with pink and , violet streamers. She was accompanied by two bridesmaids. Misses Connie Hill and Edith Brinsden, The bridegroom, who was in uniform, was attended by another returned soldier, Sergeant-Major Lawrence Penlington, son of Mr Geo. Penlington, and grandson of the late Mr Wm. Penlington, of Akaroa. After the ceremony the bride's parents held a reception, at which many guests were present. ■ Ballantyne's art department is now displaying a choice selection of silk bags for street or theatre use, made in good quality silk in various rich colourings; prices 10s 6d, 12s 6d and 17s 6d each, and this department has also just received a further selection of the latest designs in transfers. X OFFICERS' CLUB ROOMS. A gathering of staff officers, their wives and friends took .place on Thursday evening at the Canterbury Officers' Club Rooms, Colonel Smith, assisted by Miss Smith, being the host. The event was quite informal, and was greatly enjoyed by all present. An excellent musical programme was given, those contributing being Miss Livingstone and Lieutenant Hobbs, who' sang a duet; Mrs R. A. Home, who sang several solos and also took part in a duet song cycle with Mr

Hobbs; Mrs F. P. Osmond-Smith, who gave a pianoforte solo, and Mr W, J. Trewern, who sang. A recitation, given by Mr W. Rosewarne was well received. The Hon G. W. Russell gave an interesting talk on various military matters, which was much appreciated. A delicious supper was served. Miss Smith wore a charming frock of black flounced tulle, with touches of cerise on bh e bodice. A competition was held, which was won by Mrs Samson and Captain Clark. Amongst those present were the Mayor and Mrs Holland, Major and Mrs Batchelor, Major and Mrs Matthews, Major and Mrs Midgley, Major and Mrs Conolly, Major and Mrs Beattie, Captain and Mrs Leemine. Captain Gee, Mr George Booth. Miss Lyndal Booth. Major and Mrs Loach, Captain and Mrs Bell, Lieutenant and Mrs Samson, Mr and Mr.s R. A. Home, Mr 3 Hawkins.
