MR S. E. M'CARTHY, S.M.
WELCOMED BY THE BAR. Mr S. E. M'Carthy.' S.M., who was recently appointed Senior Magistrate of Christchurch. held his first sitting at the Civil Court yesterday, and was extended a welcome by the members of the Christchurch Law Society, others connected with the legal profession, police officials and sotfai service workers. There was a largo number of lawyers in CourtMr J. J. Dougall, in the unavoidable absence of Mr S- G. Raymond. K.C, president of the Law Society, said that on behalf of tho Christchurch Bar he desired to offer a very hearty welcome to Mr M'Cfc. thy, on his assuming the important position of Senior Magistrate of the city. The sneaker said that the happiest relations had existed between the Bar and Mr M'Carthy's predecessors. Mr M'Carthy came amongst them with the reputation of being an upright and just judge, and he felt sure that the same happy relations would continue to exkt between Bench and Bar. In conclusion, Mr Dougall trusted that Mr M'Carthy's stay in Christchurch would be long and pleasant, and that he would take part in many of the activities of the city. i Superintendent Dwver. on behalf of the police, and Staff Captain Barnes, of the Salvation Army, on behalf of the social service workers, also welcomed Mr M'Carthy. Mr M'Carthy. in reply, said that he was very grateful for the hearty welcome extended to him on the first day he had the honour to sit in tho Christchurch . Magistrate's Court. Ho felt sure that the happy relations begun that morning would continue. It had always been his endeavour to do justice to all men. and he trusted that he would have a very pleasant time in christchurch. Mr Dougall, addressing Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.. who was also on the Bench, said that on behalf of the Bar he wished to express a deep sense of obligation to hira for the way in which he had conducted the business of tho Court.
Mr Bailey thanked the Bar for their e ? pre ? sion °* «PPreoiation. He was glad that he was not beino- removed from Umstcnurch. buts would still sit in the Court occasionally.
