BAND MEMORIAL .

REQUEST TO SIR JAMES ALLEN/

Mr S. A. ■ Staples, chairman of thS South Island Bands Association, and Mr T. F. Hall waited on Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, on Saturday, and asked if a regimental band from Trentham Camp oould he sent to Christchurch on Bands Day, March 2, when funds, will be raised for a bandsmen’s memorial in the Christchurch Public Gardens. Mr Staples said that it would he the first memorial of the kind in Australasia since the beginning of the war.

The Minister said that if he consented to the application he would establish a precedent that might lead to applications from all over New. Zealand. He had already refused a similar application. He would, however, communicate with General Robin and the Camp Commandant, and would reply to the deputation later on. Dr Thacker, M.P., has given £25 to the fund, towards the erection of a bandsmen’s memorial.
