ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The. annual meeting of the Christchurch Orchestral Society was held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall last night, Mr J. M. Mitchell (president) in the chair.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, which have been already published, the chairman stated that the society was in a better position than it had been for years. It was the general opinion that the year was a record one. The public support had been very encouraging, and the removal to the Choral Hall for the performances had reduced the expenses very considerably. The musical works presented had included several master compositions, and the playing standard was good. The balance-sheot showed a small credit balance, while the assets quite covered the liabilities. The year would commence, under most favourable circumstances, hut it would bo necessary to secure more subscribers. There was no reason why another one hundred members should not be enrolled. While the finances were fairly satisfactory tho position must bo made stronger. The society should have a good floating credit balance, so that ample provision could be made to give the very best at the concerts in eacli year. Owing to the war the society was hot enabled to launch out, but as there was some reason to hope that peace would be proclaimed this year, (it behoved members to do ail in their power to secure new subscribers, so that tho society should begin the boom of the post-war period in a fitting manner to do higher things than it had ever done before in orchestral performancesMr Alfred J. Bunz (conductor) spoke of the work of the orchestra for the year. He considered that excellent results had been obtainod, and expressed thanks for tho support he had received as conductor.
